When Mother Nature does her thing, and your vehicle is the recipient of dozens-to-hundreds of hail-induced dings and dents you are well-advised to know everything you can about the process of the repair.

If you decide to make a claim with your insurance company, you will be required to allow the insurance adjuster to write an initial estimate of repair. In many cases, these initial estimates are intentionally (and illegally) written “light”. That is to say, the estimate is not enough to cover the actual cost of a quality repair.

Why would insurance adjusters intentionally write an estimate in violation of Colorado State law CRS 10-4-120, (II) (3) (b)? It is estimated that 50-70% of all hail damage claims are not repaired. They take advantage of this knowledge. In other words, the insurance companies know that more than half of their insured (you) will cash the claim check without actually repairing the damage, choosing to put up with the dents and pocketing the claim money.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you cash the insurance claim check and decide not to repair your car, you in essence “settle” for the amount of that check. Keep in mind that most insurance estimates are written “light”, and the actual value of your vehicle’s damage was not represented. This becomes very important if you ever decide to sell your vehicle, as the entire amount of the damage (including diminished value) will be deducted from the purchase price.

Another very common practice on the part of many insurance companies is to strongly “suggest” that you take your car to one of their “preferred” shops. In fact, after a hail storm, many insurance companies will set up an estimate station on the property of one of their preferred (DRP) auto body shops. Under the guise of “customer convenience”, they will write the estimate and introduce you to the body shop management who will gladly schedule your vehicle’s repair on the spot. This subtle form of “steering” (illegal in many states) puts pressure on you to use that body shop. Buyer beware: you have the right to choose any body shop you want to repair your vehicle, and the insurance company is required by law to pay to have your car repaired to it’s pre-loss condition. What YOU pay (your deductible) does NOT change… and in most cases, hail damage is considered an act of God, so your future rates will NOT be affected.

TRADITIONAL vs PDR

If you decide to move forward with repairing your vehicle, the body shop you choose will also write an estimate. Depending upon the amount and severity of the hail damage, they will advise one of two courses of action: PDR (Paintless Dent Repair) or Traditional body work (or a combination of the two). In many cases, PDR is the best for hail damage.

Nylund’s General Manager, John Groome says that “in most cases, we write our estimates with the intent to PDR hail damage wherever possible – as it is preferred to save a panel rather than replace a panel”. There are cases when replacing a component is necessary, but those repairs often increase the complexity, cost or timeline of the vehicle’s repair.

NOTE: If the insurance company writes the estimate to replace your vehicle’s roof, there are literally dozens of questions that you should ask the body shop before moving ahead. A roof replacement is a very complex repair that affects the vehicle’s structural integrity as well as many of the safety features. If you’d like to discuss these questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Once the body shop’s estimate is complete, they will submit it to the insurance company – and typically there will be a back and forth until both companies agree to the repair plan. The good news is, you rarely have to engage in that process. If you chose an insurance company’s “preferred” body shop, there will be no back and forth, as they are directed by the insurance company to proceed with the least expensive repair. If you choose Nylund’s Collision Center, we handle all of the details of your repair for you, making sure that no corners are cut, and that your vehicle will be repaired to perfection.

CONSUMER ALERT: After a large hail event, you may notice an influx of storm-chasing hail repair centers popping up around your community. There is a significant risk in taking your car to one of these makeshift temporary “shops”. Many times the techs are from out of state or even out of the country, and will be difficult or impossible to find should you require them to fix something they repaired. It is far better to find a trusted, well-respected body shop who will do the repair right, and be there to stand behind their work.

Are you prepared for a car accident?

No one gets into their car thinking that they will get into an accident. In fact, we don’t like to even think about such things. But being prepared for an accident – before it happens – can make a huge difference in the way things unfold after an accident occurs.

As our population grows, the number of car accidents also grows. While most accidents are not fatal, chances are good that at some point in your life, you will be involved in one. States that have legalized recreational marijuana report increased car wrecks. This Washington study details significant collision claim increases.

How to be prepared for a car accident

Get a PRINTED COPY of your car insurance policy.
Many insurance companies do not provide easy access to your actual, complete policy. Instead, they offer you boilerplate brochures that address common elements of their services. It’s important that you insist upon receiving the actual printed policy detailing everything that you are paying for. All of your rights and duties are covered within this document.

Pick a deductible that fits your budget.
One of the first ways people get prepared for a car accident is to choose their deductible. Most people, looking for the least expensive premiums, opt for higher deductibles. They are betting that they won’t get into an accident. This thinking, while common, actually goes against the purpose of having insurance in the first place. Our suggestion is for you to look at the deductible from the perspective of actually being in an accident. If and when that happens, will it be a burden for you to meet that expense when making an insurance claim? There is really not that much difference in monthly premiums for policies that have $1,000.00 and $500.00 deductibles. Explore all of your options, and choose the best for your budget.

Know what coverages you have in place.
Do you have an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) rider?
You must specifically instruct your insurance agent to add an OEM rider to your policy. If you don’t, then it is most likely that when you get into an accident, they will instruct the body shop to use aftermarket or used (junk yard) parts on your car. This is true regardless of the age, make or model of your vehicle. Imagine them putting a salvaged bumper on your brand new Lexus. It happens every single day, all across America.

Do you have rental car coverage?
One of the best ways to be prepared for a car accident is to know that you won’t be left without transportation while your car is being repaired. But like an OEM rider, you must specifically request your agent to add rental car coverage. With this addition to your policy, the insurance company will cover the cost (up to a specified limit of days) for a rental car. If you don’t have access to another car, this can be very important.

Do you have better than ‘basic’ liability coverage?
You might get sued. There’s no nicer way to say it. If you hit an expensive car, and your policy has only basic liability coverage, you might get sued for the difference between your policy limit and what it costs to repair their car. Now imagine if more than one car is involved in the accident. The amount of your liability coverage is no place for stepping over dollars to pick up pennies.

Do you have an Appraisal Clause in your policy?
An appraisal clause is an insurance provision allowing either the insurer or the insured (you) to demand a binding appraisal of damaged property if you dispute the value that your insurance company assigns to your claim. In many cases, this involves both you and your insurance company to select a third-party, independent appraiser to assess the damage and come to a binding agreement. This could force your insurance company to pay you much more money than what they originally offered. If your policy doesn’t have an appraisal clause, it may be time to look for another insurer.

Will your car be totaled by your insurance company?
There are many factors considered by your insurance company as they determine whether or not to total your car. Most companies will cover up to 70-80% of the vehicle’s value before declaring it a total wreck. But it’s important to check your state statutes, as some allow insurers to pay up to 100% of the value.

Important Information for New Drivers

Most new drivers ‘inherit’ their parent’s auto insurance policy. The terms, riders, limits and deductibles may fit your parent’s lifestyle and risk tolerance, but may not be right for you. Car accidents are far more likely for new drivers. One of the best suggestions that we can make as you get prepared for an accident is to go over each and every coverage of your policy as quickly as possible. Make appropriate adjustments to the coverage limits and riders so that you are protected when you need it most.

How to choose an insurance company

We live in a time where sound bites and catch phrases have a strong influence over our decision making processes. It’s easy to hear things like, ’15 minutes can save you 15%’, or ‘like a good neighbor’ and feel financially or emotionally driven to choose an insurer.

Or maybe a family member is an agent for a particular insurance company. They probably ‘expect’ you to bring your business to them – just because they’re related. We strongly encourage you to choose your insurance company based upon how they will respond in time of need, instead of by how they make you feel.

Some would have you believe that one part (third party or aftermarket) is just as good as the other (original manufactured) part. This is a fundamental point of disagreement that we have with many insurance companies. Fact: original parts are designed, patented, tested and safety rated by the manufacturer to offer the very best, safest driving experience possible. Aftermarket parts, by the very definition of being “replicas” – are not the same as OEM parts. They are not safety rated or crash tested.

Diminished value is something every consumer needs to be aware of.

You pay them every month from the time you’re 16 years old. They tell you that you’re in good hands. They assure you that you saved 15% or more in 15 minutes – and that you’ve made a good choice to insure with them.

Then the rains come down, and the floods come up… and the hail… the hail… the hail. So you do what you’ve been trained to do – you call your insurance company and make a claim. The adjuster comes out, looks at your vehicle and writes an estimate. They write for the least expensive, often 3rd party or re-manufactured, ill fitting replacement parts.

The auto body shop you choose has everything to do with the quality of your repair. If they are in some sort of partnership with the insurance companies, then they will likely put substandard parts into the repair of your vehicle. If they cut corners in an effort to speed up the repair, those shortcuts could put your safety at risk – and will absolutely affect the resale value of your car.

WHEN SHOULD I CLAIM DIMINISHED VALUE?

It is almost always a wise decision to have a post-repair inspection after a collision repair IF YOU FIT THESE CRITERIA. These inspections are performed by independent technicians, and reveal the quality of the repair. Often such an inspection comes along with an estimate of diminished value of your vehicle. Diminished value is defined as that portion of a damaged vehicle’s pre-loss value that has NOT been restored through the repair process. Insurance companies do not tell their claimants about diminished value, but they ARE responsible to cover the difference in value (which is almost always thousands of dollars).

Consider this compelling video from our friends Mark’s Body Shop in Baltimore, MD:

Where do you go for a post-repair inspection? There are many places. Nylund’s Collision Center has always offered a free visual inspection for anyone wanting to check the quality of repairs performed at other shops. And who do we refer our own guests to? We recommend the services of Auto Damage Experts, and David Smith. Ultimately, your safety is of paramount importance. Secondarily, you are entitled to know if your repair was properly executed, and whether you are owed more money than the insurance company originally offered you.

As a consumer, you want to know what to expect when it comes to the “cycle time” of your repair. In other words, “how long will it take to fix my car”? And you’re not alone. The insurance companies and repair facilities also have a keen interest in the answer. Indeed, the question has been asked, researched and argued over for years.

Unfortunately, there is no cookie cutter answer. It’s like asking, “how long will it take me to recover from surgery”? Many variables affect the outcome. Height, weight, age, overall health, athleticism, medical history… and the list goes on with each new variable causing another calculation that changes the answer.

Find out if you are owed more than
what the insurance company is offering: Click Here

Each and every fix or repair is different. There are many elements that might affect the amount of time estimated to complete your repair. Starting with, when does the clock start? Should repair days begin the moment a non-drivable car is towed to the body shop? Or should we start the clock the day the car is dropped off for a scheduled repair? Maybe it should start once an agreement has been reached with the insurance company as to the plan of repair. Or perhaps the clock should start only after the parts have been delivered to the shop.

Unfortunately, there is no standard to even this most fundamental question.

Many have tried to figure out a formula to answer the cycle time question including Insurance companies and trade associations. Even rental car agencies are providing rental data to third parties to try to come up with some standard for days to fix a car.

Here is an example of what we consider to be a failed system of figuring cycle time that is currently in place, embraced by the insurance companies.

Repair plans (estimates to fix cars) generally have labor time associated with each operation. Example—let’s say you need your fender replaced. The time associated with taking it off the vehicle and re installing a new one might be 3 hours. The fender does not come painted so to paint the fender the time associated with that may be also 3 hours. (In this example we are assuming there is no blending of the adjacent panels like the hood and front door for color match. That of course would add more time). So our example totals 6 hours of labor.

Different insurance companies arrive at cycle time by dividing the number of labor hours by an inconsistent factor. Some say the number should be 6; others say 5 or even 4. In our example of a 6-hour repair, let’s assume a factor of 5. (6 hrs /5 = 1.2 days). Insurance companies generally round to the nearest whole number so this would be a one-day repair. Keep in mind, this is a very simple example and while 1 day is not totally impossible it is certainly not likely either.

What is realistic? Let’s take a look at some sources that have done in-depth research on the subject. The opening line of an article published in May of 2014 by the Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) states the following: “Industry-wide averages for estimated time for repair do not mesh with many expectations placed on shops by insurance carriers. The resulting calculations demonstrate the huge level of disparity between reality and expectation.” SCRS did extensive research using data collected form Enterprise Rent a Car, Hertz and two Collision database/estimating service providers, Mitchell International and CCC Information Services Inc. The article concluded with an interview with a body shop owner that found that using a factor of 2 worked best in his shop. http://www.fenderbender.com/FenderBender/May-2014/SCRS-Study-Estimated-Time-for-Repair-Not-Consistent-with-Insurer-Expectations/

In 2014 article reporting on a panel discussion during the Collision Industry Conference the question about using this formula was posed this way: “Do insurer formulas used to calculate the number of “rental days” on an initial estimate drive down cycle time? Do they set unrealistic expectations for consumers? Do they add friction and inefficiencies? Or do they do some combination of all of these things?” Likely all of the above. http://www.autobodynews.com/columnists/john-yoswick/item/8841-cic-committees-look-at-autonomous-vehicle-issues-impact-of-length-of-rental-formulas.html

In an article published by Auto Rental News in June of 2013, the author came up with averages by state. In a chart provided in the article they show average labor hours and rental days associated. The Colorado data shows average of 21.5 labor hours (across all repairs) and average rental days associated with that to be 10.9. This information further suggests that using the factor of 2 is the best way to estimate repair days. (21.5 repair hours / 2 = 10.7 days to repair). http://www.autorentalnews.com/article/story/2013/05/average-length-of-rental-where-do-you-fall/page/2.aspx

Other items/operations that don’t get counted into the formula but adds to the time it takes to fix a vehicle are sublet items. Items that a shop may sub out to other companies include alignments, clear bra, glass removal and re-installation, and paintless dent repair. These items are generally listed on the fix or repair plan/estimate with a dollar value not a labor time. So when an insurance company divides the labor time on a repair by ANY factor it does not take these and other sublet items into account when coming up with the days to repair.

Why would an insurance company use factor of 5 and not 2? Let’s take a 30 labor hour job and divide it by 5. That would equate to 6 days of rental expense. If you take the same 30 labor hour job and divide it by 2, it would equate to 15 days of rental. The insurance company views that calculation as an extra 9 days of rental. Their primary goal is to reduce their own expense.

In our experience on the subject, saving the rental expense is far more important to the insurance companies than the quality of the repair.

The insurance company’s answer is no real fix – for you.

Their answer to this is simple. If we can’t do the repair in the amount of time they feel is reasonable, you can take it to one of their “preferred shops” that will. And even if they cant complete the repair within the designated time frame, because of their contract with the insurance company, the shop will pay the extra days.

Many insurance companies stick to these unproven and often unrealistic formulas to attempt to transfer their fiduciary responsibility and expense on to someone else. Many times that ends up being the consumer, or even the body shop owners who clearly had nothing to do with the damage of your vehicle.

So how long will it take to get your car fixed? There is no iron-clad answer. Our team of passionate professionals will move your vehicle through our repair process as quickly as possible but never at the expense of safety, durability and the resale value of your car.

The front range of Colorado is considered the “hail capital of the United States”, and when storms roll through, it can flood the local auto body shops for months. This was the case recently, and Nylund’s has appointments to repair hail damage up to six months out. And our story isn’t unique – many shops have been inundated with hail damage claims.

We are asked some variation of this question several times a day. While we cannot quote a price without looking at (estimating) your vehicle’s specific damage, we can tell you this: In most cases, it won’t cost you any more to have it fixed the RIGHT WAY at Nylund’s. Typically, you pay your insurance deductible, and the insurance company is obligated to pay the repair shop to restore the vehicle to it’s “pre-loss” condition.

This is where the Nylund’s difference (#NylundsDone) comes into the equation. From the moment you become our guest, we begin to advocate on behalf of your best interest with your insurance company. Many times, insurance will write estimates that favor the lowest-cost (read: cheapest) repair in order to save THEM money. At Nylund’s we write our estimates for safety first, and quality always. In many cases, that means replacing original Manufacturer’s parts with new Manufacturer’s parts. Third-party and used parts are simply not the same thing, and often do not fit as well.

As our guest, you will experience the very best in service. If you require a rental car, we’ll make the arrangements. While your vehicle is at our shop, we’ll take care of speaking to your insurance company. And when we’re done, you’ll understand why hundreds of people every year trust only Nylund’s to repair their cars.

Have questions? Run ‘em by us. Call 303-761-9219, or go ahead and stop on by. It’s our pleasure to serve you.
