Toyota & Lexus Certified Collision Repair: What Factory Certification Really Means

Toyota and Lexus engineer vehicles as complete systems. Structure, materials, electronics, restraint systems, advanced driver assistance technologies and even the methods used to join certain components are designed to work together.

After a collision, repairing a Toyota or Lexus properly means understanding that engineering system and following the specific and detailed repair procedures developed for the vehicle.

That responsibility also reflects an important principle within Toyota’s culture: Kaizen, or continuous improvement. Vehicle technology continues to change, repair procedures evolve, and the knowledge required to repair these vehicles must continue developing with them. Toyota and Lexus Certification establishes an important standard, while continued training and experience allow certified collision repair professionals to keep building upon that foundation.

Nylund’s Collision Center in Englewood, Colorado, is both Toyota Certified and Lexus Certified. Across our technical, estimating and administrative team, many members have continued through Toyota and Lexus training pathways beyond Foundations to achieve advanced Senior and Master-level credentials.

For us, that progression reflects Kaizen in practice. As vehicle technology evolves, our responsibility is to continue developing the knowledge and experience necessary to understand how those vehicles are designed to be repaired.

What Toyota and Lexus Collision Certification Means

Certification is much more than a sign on the building or a plaque on the wall.

Toyota and Lexus establish requirements covering technician and staff training, repair information, tools and equipment, facility capabilities and repair processes. Maintaining certification requires an ongoing commitment to those standards as vehicles, materials and technologies continue to evolve.

Training begins with the Foundations curriculum. Foundations establishes the knowledge required for personnel participating in the certified collision program and satisfies the certification level required by the program.

Toyota and Lexus also provide pathways for continued professional development beyond Foundations. That advancement requires more than completing additional coursework. Time and experience are deliberately built into the certification structure.

Within the Lexus training structure, qualified team members can progress from Foundations Certified to Senior Certified and ultimately Master Certified. Each level requires the applicable coursework and qualifications for the individual’s role, along with required time in service before advancement to the next level. These advanced credentials therefore represent knowledge developed through both factory training and experience over time.

Toyota also provides advanced training pathways leading to Master Certification, with requirements varying according to an individual’s position and technical responsibilities.

That distinction matters because certification establishes a standard for the facility, while individual training can continue considerably further.

At Nylund’s, we have chosen to make that continued development part of our long-term investment in our people. Many members of our technical, estimating and administrative team have progressed beyond Foundations and achieved Senior and Master-level credentials within their respective Toyota and Lexus training pathways.

Those credentials represent years of accumulated training and experience. They cannot be achieved simply by completing a course or joining a certified facility. They reflect continued participation in the program, completion of advanced training and the time required to progress through the manufacturer’s established pathway.

Factory Training That Goes Beyond the Classroom

Toyota and Lexus collision training combines different forms of education depending upon the course and position, including web-based instruction, in-class, instructor-led education and hands-on laboratory training.

Advanced training can require members of our team to travel to one of four Toyota and Lexus training facilities across America.

That investment of time serves an important purpose.

Technicians can work directly with vehicle structures, materials, repair equipment and procedures in an environment designed specifically for learning the manufacturer’s repair methodology. Estimators, managers and other personnel receive training appropriate to the decisions they make during the repair process.

The objective is more than knowing what procedure Toyota or Lexus specifies.

It is understanding how to locate the correct information, interpret it accurately and apply it to the specific vehicle being repaired.

Toyota and Lexus OEM Collision Repair Procedures

Modern collision repair involves much more than restoring the appearance of damaged parts.

Toyota and Lexus publish detailed OEM collision repair information describing how specific operations are to be performed. Those resources include collision repair manuals, technical information and Collision Repair Information Bulletins, commonly called CRIBs.

These procedures can address subjects such as precise welding methods, component replacement, structural measurements, corrosion protection, restraint systems, Advanced Driver Assist Systems, and precautions required before certain repairs begin.

For example, a procedure may specify preparation that must occur before welding or require test welds so a technician can verify equipment settings before welding the vehicle itself.

These details matter because the repair method is part of the engineering.

At Nylund’s, researching the applicable Toyota or Lexus OEM repair information is part of determining how the vehicle should be repaired.

Understanding Modern Toyota and Lexus Vehicle Structures

Modern Toyota and Lexus vehicle structures can incorporate multiple types and tensil strengths of steel within a relatively small area of the vehicle.

A single repair area may contain multiple layers of steel with different thicknesses and material strengths. Those materials can be positioned deliberately to manage energy during a collision while helping protect the passenger compartment.

That engineering affects how damaged components can be repaired or replaced.

Technicians therefore need to understand more than how to operate welding equipment. They must understand where particular joining methods are permitted, what preparation is required, how equipment must be configured and what Toyota or Lexus specifies for that particular vehicle and repair location.

Advanced factory training gives technicians practical experience working with these structures and learning the measurement and repair techniques associated with them.

The objective is to restore the vehicle using the procedures and tolerances established for it by the manufacturer.

Special Tools, Equipment and Technology

Following manufacturer repair procedures also requires having the appropriate equipment available to perform them.

Toyota and Lexus certification includes requirements involving tools and equipment used for structural repair, measuring, diagnostics and other vehicle systems.

Depending upon the vehicle and repair, this can include manufacturer-specified Special Service Tools, commonly called SSTs, three-dimensional electronic measuring equipment, welding equipment, diagnostic hardware and software, and equipment associated with increasingly sophisticated vehicle electronics.

This becomes particularly important as Toyota and Lexus vehicles incorporate technologies such as hybrid and electric powertrains, cameras, radar, advanced restraint systems and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, commonly known as ADAS.

A collision may affect systems well beyond the area where visible damage appears.

That is why modern Toyota and Lexus collision repair increasingly involves research, diagnostics and verification in addition to traditional body and refinishing work.

Why Training and Experience Matter After a Collision

Factory training is intentionally progressive.

Foundations provides the starting point. Advanced credentials require additional education, experience and, for applicable technical roles, additional professional qualifications.

Time is an important part of that process because some knowledge develops through experience.

The person developing a repair plan needs to understand how to locate and interpret the applicable Toyota or Lexus repair information. The technician performing the repair needs to understand the materials, joining methods, equipment and procedures involved. Other members of the collision repair team need knowledge appropriate to the decisions they make throughout the repair process.

That is one reason Nylund’s invests in advanced training across multiple roles within our organization.

Collision repair is a process involving many people, and the quality of that process depends upon knowledgeable decisions being made from the initial assessment through the completion of the repair.

The Lexus Covenant and the Toyota Way

Technical knowledge is only part of what Toyota and Lexus represent.

The Lexus Covenant emphasizes doing things right from the start and treating each customer as a guest in our home.

The Toyota Way places continuous improvement and respect for people at the center of the organization.

Those principles closely reflect how we believe collision repair should be approached.

An accident is rarely something a vehicle owner planned for. Suddenly, the guest may be dealing with vehicle damage, transportation problems, insurance questions and decisions about a repair process they may never have encountered before.

Our responsibility is to make that process understandable.

That means explaining what we find, researching what the manufacturer requires, answering questions and helping the guest make informed decisions about the repair of their Toyota or Lexus.
