If your car has been in a collision, bumper repair safety may be the last thing on your mind — but it should be the first.

Most drivers assume a repaired bumper is a safe bumper. General Motors says otherwise. GM recently released an official position statement making clear that the bumper on your vehicle is not just cosmetic — and that an improper repair can quietly put you at risk long after you drive off the lot.

Here’s what you need to know.

Why Bumper Repair Safety Is About More Than Looks

Your bumper is part of an engineered system. It works together with energy absorbers, reinforcement bars, mounting hardware, and sensors. Every component is designed to perform in a very specific way during a crash.

When that system is repaired incorrectly, it may still look perfect. But it won’t perform the way it was built to.

GM’s position statement identifies specific practices that compromise this system:

Repair methods not approved by the manufacturer

Ignoring material limitations of modern plastics and composites

Refinishing processes that change how the material behaves under stress

Reusing components that are engineered to be replaced after a collision

These are not suggestions. They are engineering-based safety requirements.

How a Bad Bumper Repair Can Disable Your Safety Sensors

This is the part most drivers never hear about — and it matters every time you drive.

Modern vehicles use Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, or ADAS. These include parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and collision avoidance systems. Many of these sensors sit directly behind or within the bumper.

GM warns that too much material on the bumper surface — from excessive paint thickness or improperly applied body filler — can interfere with how those sensors work. They may become less accurate, slower to respond, or unreliable.

There is no warning light for this. Your car will seem completely normal. The sensors will simply fail to respond the way they should — at the exact moment you need them.

What Insurance Pressure Has to Do With It

Insurance companies are focused on cost control. That often means pressure on repair shops to repair rather than replace, or to use parts that don’t meet OEM specifications.

On paper, that can look reasonable. But your policy is supposed to restore your vehicle to its pre-loss condition. If the repair doesn’t meet manufacturer requirements, it hasn’t done that — regardless of how the car looks.

The right question is never just “does it look right?” It’s “does this repair meet GM’s requirements for this vehicle?”

Bumper Repair Safety Checklist: Questions to Ask Before You Approve Any Repair

Before you sign off on a bumper repair, ask these questions directly:

Are you following OEM procedures for my specific vehicle?

Are any parts being repaired that the manufacturer requires to be replaced?

Does this repair align with the manufacturer’s position statements?

Will ADAS sensors be recalibrated after the repair is complete?

A shop that follows manufacturer guidelines will have no trouble answering all four.

The Bottom Line

GM didn’t release this position statement by accident. These issues are happening in shops every day. A bumper that looks fixed is not the same as a bumper that performs as designed.

At Nylund’s Collision Center in Englewood, Colorado, we follow OEM repair procedures on every vehicle — because your safety after the repair matters just as much as your safety before the accident.

If you have questions about a recent repair or want to understand what proper collision repair looks like, we’re here to help.

Nylund’s Collision Center is a Lexus and Lucid authorized and Toyota certified repair facility serving the Denver metro area.

Her beautiful 2000 BMW was hit (rear bumper), and she immediately brought it to Nylund’s for the only type of repair that she will have performed on her beloved car: the right one. This is how it should be.

We received her vehicle, set her up with a rental, and took care of everything for her. We handled all the business of meeting with the insurance company, made sure the repair was done properly and upon completion we invited Sally to pick up her ‘baby’ from our showroom floor.

This photo doesn’t just show the smile of a woman who is excited to pick up her car. It shows the nature of the relationship we have with Sally… and all of our guests here at Nylund’s Collision Center. It shows the authentic friendship between Sally and the ownership of Nylund’s (Carol Grieve pictured on right).

You see, this photo isn’t about a transaction, or that we make bad things go away and restore cars to their original beauty. It’s about the fact that we know, and genuinely care about every one of our guests.

Sally Wurr is a valuable member of our community. She’s the owner of an amazing business: SW Insurance Corp., and she works as hard as anyone we know. She is loved by her clients, because – like us – she will never compromise the right thing for an easy dollar. Sally is the embodiment of everything that we strive to be here at Nylund’s.

Sally… is our reason why! How it should be.

Last week, we posted a photo series on our Facebook Page, detailing the damage to one of our guests’ cars – specifically the front bumper of his 2013 Lexus GS 350 “F” Sport. The original, Lexus manufactured part, working in precise harmony with the airbag deployment system, probably saved our guest’s life.

We wrote our estimate to replace the now-crumpled bumper with another Lexus manufactured bumper. It is an integral safety component, and for such parts we simply will not compromise. Our guest’s insurance company adjuster came out, and wrote their estimate for a third-party replacement bumper. The difference in price between the original, Lexus-backed bumper and this third-party, non crash-tested bumper: $32.00

We created a supplemental estimate that once again included the original manufacturer’s part, and again our guest’s insurance company denied payment for that, resubmitting only enough money to cover the non OEM bumper. This dance continued until the insurance company dug their feet in the ground and informed us that they would NEVER pay for the original part. It was their opinion that our estimate was an extravagant and unnecessary expenditure of their money.

We took this information back to our guest, explaining that this is a common practice for insurance companies. It’s called cost-shifting, and in the end, the insurance company (who has collected premiums for years, perhaps decades) refuses to pay the $32.00 difference – shifting the burden to either their insured (our guest), or to us. (Nylund’s was not involved in the accident that brought this car to us.)

It’s $32.00. What’s the big deal, right? Well… let’s see.

If Lexus patents it’s parts (and they do), then ANY OTHER part, no matter how closely they “look like” the original… cannot, by definition, be EXACTLY like the original. Documentation and videos abound regarding the importance of every component of an automobile’s safety equipment working together in a precise manner. Life and death are in the balance of a nano-second response. Too early, and injury can occur. Too late spells equal disaster.

If this third-party, aftermarket bumper should ever perform in a substandard way, because it is – by definition – different from the original… and someone were injured – or worse – killed in an accident… who would be responsible? Lexus certainly wouldn’t stand behind a non-Lexus part. To whom does the liability fall? And do we really need to actually have that conversation? Over a $32.00 difference?

In the end, our guest called the insurance company and inquired as to why they wouldn’t authorize an original, Lexus-made bumper on his nearly brand-new automobile that was still under full warranty. We don’t know exactly what transpired during that phone call… but we are happy to report that the insurance company – somewhat begrudgingly – has agreed to pay the additional $32.00 to do the job right.

It may seem like a big amount of trouble for a small amount of money… but here at Nylund’s we believe that your safety is worth more than $32.00.

It has been said that the ‘proof is in the pudding.’ Here at Nylund’s Collision Center, we say that the proof is in the fit.

Take a close look at the reason we say: “If it’s not perfect… It’s not leaving.”

Notice how the photo on the left shows the third party bumper is misaligned to the gate line by almost a quarter inch. This is unacceptable for the owner of such a beautifully designed vehicle, so we ordered an original Lexus bumper, which lined up perfectly.

In this next series of photos, the third party part is so poorly aligned with the original specs, that the attachment holes are completely inaccessible.

We are truly proud of what we do here and always happy to offer a tour of the shop. He gladly accepted the invitation and toured our facility as we explained our repair process to him, after which the customer was greatly at ease and completely confident the repair process was in good hands. We were happy to welcome him as a new Nylund’s Collision Center client!

We disassembled the car to assess all damage and prepare an estimate for the insurance company. The trunk lid, trunk floor, bumper, right and left quarter panel and the unibody frame extension were all badly damaged in the accident. Once the repairs were approved by the insurance company, we ordered all the original equipment Lexus bumper parts. Next stop was the frame machine where we used our computerized Car-O-Liner 3D measuring system to evaluate the severity of the damage. With this equipment we can make corrective pulls to return the outer body panels and unibody back to the original factory specifications. After all the necessary unibody frame pulls were completed, it was time to cut the old/damaged panels off the car. In this case we removed the entire Trunk floor, right unibody frame rail, and right quarter panel.

Next we started welding the new pieces in place.

When the new Lexus bumper and other parts arrived, the new unibody components, trunk floor, frame extension and right quarter panel were welded onto the vehicle and the left quarter panel repaired. Next it was on to sanding, priming and a two-part sealer before the car went into the down draft paint booth for baked on 2-stage base coat/clear coat metallic painting. Finally, the car was reassembled, color sanded and polished, given a four wheel alignment, put through our quality control measures, given a full detail and returned to the guest. The Lexus bumper was indistinguishable from the original manufacturer’s showroom model.

Many times, minor collision repair can be done while you wait. Take for instance one of our Mercedes Benz owners was hit in the rear. He sustained minor damage to the rear bumper. However it was bad enough the bumper needed to be replaced. On the first visit, we assessed the damage, took some photos and gathered the insurance company information. Then we took a small piece off the car so we could match the paint exactly without the vehicle being here. The customer was on their way. After settling all the details with the insurance company, we ordered the parts. When they arrived a few days later, we then made sure they were correct based on the photos we had and into the paint shop they went. We already had a painted piece off the car, so we matched the color and pre-painted the bumper. During this time we called the customer and made arrangements for them to stop by the shop the next day. They came in, brought their lap top, and waited while we had 3 technicians (pit stop style) remove the old bumper, build and install the new one. An hour later they were on their way. No rental, no rides, no need to be without the car. Just done!
