Congratulations to the Top-Ranked Award-Winning Insurers of 2023

Choosing the right insurance company to protect your vehicle is an important decision that requires research and trust. Luckily, there are several excellent options available. CRASH Network has released its annual ranking of award-winning insurers. Over 1,000 body shop owners from all across the country were asked to answer a single question in an effort to provide a letter grade for the insurance companies that they work with. That question was: “How well does this company’s claims handling policies, attitude and payment practices ensure quality repairs and customer service for motorists?”

We would like to congratulate the top-ranked insurers that made the Honor Roll. There were 29 companies that scored with a grade of B or higher. Among them are some that are focused only on a very specific part of the country (like North Carolina Farm Bureau, who was ranked #1 out of 87). Others have a wider geographic reach, including Colorado, such as Chubb (who ranked in 2nd place). For a complete list of insurance companies graded, and where they were ranked, please click here to download the report from CRASH Network.

Visit the CRASH Network for the 2023 Insurer Report Card

These award-winning insurers have all demonstrated a commitment to customer service and satisfaction, competitive pricing, and comprehensive coverage options. We are impressed by their dedication to their policyholders and their willingness to go the extra mile to provide the protection and peace of mind that they deserve.

We would like to give a special shoutout to North Carolina Farm Bureau, which ranked number one on the list for the fourth year in a row. This insurer has a long-standing tradition of putting its members first and providing excellent service to its policyholders.

We would also like to congratulate Chubb and Erie Insurance for earning spots in the top three. These companies have consistently ranked high in customer satisfaction surveys and have a reputation for providing high-quality coverage and exceptional customer service.

Other noteworthy insurers on the list include Acuity Insurance, which ranked fifth, and Amica Mutual, which ranked twelfth. These insurers have also earned high marks for customer satisfaction and offer a variety of coverage options to meet the needs of their policyholders.

We would like to extend our congratulations to all of the insurers on this list for their dedication to their policyholders and their commitment to providing the best possible service and coverage options. We encourage anyone looking for insurance to consider these top-ranked insurers, as they have demonstrated their ability to provide the protection and peace of mind that policyholders deserve.

Award-Winning Insurers and Nylund’s Collision Center

Let’s take a moment to highlight a few insurers that we regularly work with in our collision center. Chubb, Acuity Insurance, Amica Mutual, and PURE Insurance have all been outstanding to their policyholders when it comes to vehicle repairs.

These insurers have consistently demonstrated a guest-focused approach to the repair process, ensuring that their policyholders receive the proper repair that they deserve. They have also been relatively easy and pleasant to work with, providing clear communication and efficient processing of claims.

Chubb and Acuity Insurance, in particular, have been very proactive in helping their policyholders navigate the repair process, making sure that they are informed and comfortable with the repairs being done to their vehicles. Amica Mutual has also shown a strong commitment to customer satisfaction, going above and beyond to ensure that their policyholders are well taken care of.

PURE Insurance has consistently demonstrated a high level of professionalism and expertise in handling claims and ensuring that their policyholders receive the best possible repairs.

We are grateful to these insurers for their commitment to their policyholders and for their interactions with our collision center. We can confidently say that working with these insurers has been a genuine pleasure, and we look forward to continuing to work with them in the future.

It’s also important to note that when guests come to us and these award-winning insurers are involved in the claims process, their repair finds its way quickly and easily to the front of the line. Without all of the bureaucratic nonsense and stepping over dollars to save dimes, the repair order is quickly agreed upon, and we can get right to work. This translates into a much better experience for the guest, which is what we are all about here at Nylund’s.

Some Lower-Rated Insurers

Now, we’ve just been focusing on the Honor Roll award winners up to this point. And you may have noticed that we haven’t mentioned any of the “big boys”. Where do all the insurance companies you see in the television commercials land on the report card? We’re glad you asked because chances are good that you are carrying one or more policies with them. And it’s our necessary responsibility to let you know that not one of the top 10 most popular insurers made the honor roll. In fact, not one of the 10 largest insurers scored above 40% of those graded on the Insurer Report Card.

When it comes to insurance, people trust that their policies will protect them in the event of an accident or other loss. Insurance companies are supposed to be there to help their clients through the difficult aftermath of a serious incident. However, some insurance companies may prioritize their own profits over the well-being of their clients. This can result in cut corners, payment for aftermarket or salvaged parts, or skipping necessary original equipment manufacturer (OEM) procedures to save costs.

Cutting corners may involve using less expensive parts or skipping procedures that are recommended by the original manufacturer. This is often done to save money, but it can compromise the safety of the insured. For example, a car that has been repaired with aftermarket or salvaged parts may not have the same level of structural integrity as one that has been repaired with OEM parts. Similarly, skipping over necessary OEM procedures could mean that the vehicle isn’t fully restored to its pre-accident condition, potentially putting the driver and passengers at risk in future accidents.

When insurance companies prioritize their profits over the safety of their clients, they are not fulfilling their end of the agreement. Insured individuals pay premiums for a sense of security and peace of mind, and they trust that their insurance company will do everything in its power to help them through a difficult time. But when insurers prioritize cost-cutting measures over the best interests of their clients, it can leave those clients in a vulnerable position. In such cases, it’s important for the insured to be aware of their rights and to advocate for the best possible repairs and procedures for their vehicles.

Where Does Your Insurer Rank?

We encourage you to go to CRASH Network and download the report to see where your insurer ranks. And of course, if you have any questions, we are always available to provide answers. Feel free to contact us here.

We asked the newest, hottest artificial intelligence (AI) tool – ChatGPT – to come up with a list of 5 topics that would be relevant and helpful for consumers who require the services of a collision center. The software’s reply was instantaneous and pretty spot-on. Before we get into the five points that the AI engine thought you, the consumer, should know; we thought it important to let you know what ChatGPT is (and isn’t).

ChatGPT is a computer program that was designed to have conversations with people. Think of it as something like a robot that is capable of very detailed two-way communication. It is part of an emerging technology known as “Generative AI”. Such systems fall under the broad umbrella category of machine learning. What this means in simple terms is that the software is not only able to reply to your input – but it is also able to quite handily turn your prompts into previously uncreated content.

Generative AI can create art, written content, music, computer code, new product designs, and much more. And yet, with all of its abilities… it also has limitations. As a tool, it’s remarkable. And it’s not going anywhere. We are living through the most innovative technical revolution since the birth of the Internet. Wise are the people who learn how to use this technology appropriately.

So, the instruction (called a “prompt”) that we asked ChatGPT was this: “Write a list of 5 topics that would be relevant and helpful for consumers who require the services of a collision center.”

With less than a second of “think time”, the artificial intelligence started to output the following:

1. Understanding the collision repair process: This can include information on what to expect when taking a vehicle to a collision center, what kinds of repairs can be made, and how long the process typically takes.

This is one of the fundamentals here at Nylund’s Collision Center. We have always believed that an educated consumer makes better decisions, and is less likely to be taken advantage of. And while some of the questions (like how long will it take to repair my car) have no definitive answers, the question does offer an opportunity to explain the process behind the scenes.

2. Working with insurance companies: If a consumer’s vehicle has been damaged in an accident, they will likely need to work with their insurance company to recover the cost of repairs. Understanding how to navigate this process and what to look out for can be helpful.

Also a great topic, and ripe for clearing up misconceptions and outright deceptions.

3. Choosing a reputable collision center: Consumers should know what to look for when choosing a collision center, such as the qualifications and experience of the technicians, the quality of the repairs, and the level of customer service.

This is one of the most important topics that we try to communicate to our audience. The pressure the insurance industry puts on their insured to take their vehicles to shops with partnership agreements is intense. Knowing the questions to ask of any body shop owner or manager is critical to ensuring a proper repair even before it starts.

4. Keeping a record of repairs: Consumers should be encouraged to keep a record of all repairs made to their vehicle, including the date, cost, and type of repair. This can be useful if there are any issues with the repairs down the line.

We hammer this point at every opportunity. One of the most important things you can do is ask for every copy of the estimate and all supplements added to it along the way. Look for items that are labeled aftermarket or salvaged parts. Such items will decrease the value of your vehicle, and quite possibly put your safety in jeopardy.

5. Understanding the importance of original parts: Many collision centers use aftermarket or imitation parts for repairs, but consumers should be informed about the benefits of using original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts, such as better fit and finish and greater reliability.

Yes, This. Always. We are huge advocates for the use of ONLY OEM parts in your vehicle’s repair. No one knows your car better than the manufacturer. There are many reasons to take such a position, but perhaps none are as important as your safety and that of your loved ones. We encourage you to never compromise safety in the name of saving a few dollars. It’s just not worth it.

Overall, we are impressed with ChatGPT’s ability to process our prompts and deliver helpful answers. But keep in mind, as we have already mentioned… not everything it puts out is 100% accurate or up to date. The limitations of this technology are real, and you would be wise to always check its output with a skilled professional.

A couple of expert resources that you may find valuable are the Colorado Dept. of Insurance, and the Society of Collision Repair Specialists’ Consumer Tips. These folks can answer any questions you might have when it comes to insurance company behaviors or what you need to know about collision repair. And as always, you may contact us directly with any questions you might have as well.

Here at Nylund’s, we write hundreds of repair plans every month – and we are accountable to our guests to be as thorough as possible. That’s not to squeeze every last dollar out of their insurance company, but rather to absolutely ensure the safest repair and least amount of diminished value to their vehicle as possible. To make sure that we always provide the most accurate repair plan estimates, we rely on free software called, “The Database Enhancement Gateway”, or DEG for short.

What is DEG?

The Database Enhancement Gateway (DEG) is a free online resource administered by Danny Gredinberg that was developed to address inquiries to information providers (IPs) about collision repair estimating data. It serves as a valuable resource for those in the collision repair industry, providing information and support related to the estimation of repairs.

DEG plays an important role in the collision repair industry by improving the accuracy and efficiency of collision repair estimating data. This information is critical for ensuring that repairs are done properly and that the costs associated with those repairs are accurately estimated. By providing access to this information, DEG helps to ensure that the collision repair industry operates smoothly and effectively.

In short, DEG is an essential resource for the collision repair industry, providing critical information and support to those involved in the estimation of repairs. By serving as a central hub for information related to collision repair estimating, DEG plays a crucial role in ensuring that repairs are performed accurately and efficiently.

Perhaps the thing we appreciate most about DEG is that it levels the playing field between repairers like us, and payers (insurance companies in most cases who use the same software). The software does not have the disposition to support one or the other… it supports both by presenting information that is equally available to anyone touching any one of the three major estimating systems.

Danny Gredinberg’s Experience in Collision Repair

Danny Gredinberg has been in the collision repair industry for nearly 16 years, during which time he has gained a wealth of experience and expertise. As a certified technician, estimator, and senior in the field, Gredinberg developed a deep understanding of the ins and outs of collision repair.

Gredinberg’s extensive experience in the collision repair industry has provided him with a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities in the field. This experience has equipped him with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in his role as the administrator of the Database Enhancement Gateway (DEG).

By leveraging his years of experience in the field, Gredinberg is able to bring a fresh perspective and new ideas to the industry, which has been essential to DEG’s success.

Gredinberg is also the co-host of the Society of Collision Repair Specialists’ series of videos titled Quick Tips and Consumer Tips. Together with Mike Anderson of Collision Advice, Gredinberg offers helpful insights to both industry experts and consumers alike.

Gredinberg was recognized with March Taylor Kina’ole Award in November of 2022. Kina’ole is a Hawaiian term that means, “without flaw or defect”. March Taylor was a master technician who also owned a collision center in Hawaii. He was credited for spearheading the idea of a centralized information service that became the DEG.

Why We Support DEG

As previously mentioned, the DEG software is 100% FREE to anyone in the collision industry. That said, the years of development and maintenance of the platform come at considerable expense. That’s why we are proud to be Gold-level sponsors of this software. And we encourage other repairers who make use of this free tool to also consider supporting it. Such support is not about getting a name or logo on a banner, but rather standing together and doing the right thing for the consumer.

If you would like to know more about Danny Gredinberg or DEG, please don’t hesitate to contact us directly. It would be our pleasure to make an introduction. And we’re confident that repairers will see an immediate benefit to their use of the software as well.

The Top Performer award is for insurers that demonstrate a strong customer-forward service model.

Accidents are stressful. Getting your vehicle repaired properly shouldn’t have to be.

Robert Grieve, owner of Nylund’s Collision Center has always been driven by a guest-forward attitude when it comes to how he operates his business. “Every decision we make – from how we answer the phones, to the types of parts we use on every vehicle – is made through the eyes of ‘what’s the very best we can offer our guests’”, says Grieve. “We know that after an accident, stress levels are high and there are many voices offering all kinds of advice about where to take your vehicle to be repaired.”

While Nylund’s Collision Center is not (never has been) affiliated in any way (no DRP relationship) with any insurance entity. The Top Performer status is solely a recognition of any insurance company that has repeatedly demonstrated their commitment to the guest experience.

“It has been our observation that AIG Private Client Group has consistently offered their insured a smooth, quick and complete guest experience. Their adjusters are well-educated, and there’s never a fight when it comes to paying for the proper repairs. We recognize the professionalism and global understanding of this company to serve our guests (their insured) with the highest level of integrity”, said Grieve. “As a result of this approach to claims resolution, our guests move quickly through the repair process, and can be confident that their vehicle will be delivered per the manufacturer’s procedures.”

We encourage you to check out AIG Insurance for yourself. And we always welcome your feedback about your experience.

Why, in 2020, is there still such a large disparity between performing the correct repair and the most profitable repair for the body shop, technicians and insurance companies? Why do so many within our ranks put the guest’s best interests behind their own bottom lines?

The answer, in my humble… but accurate opinion, is either ignorance or greed. In this article we will explore two case studies (of many) that are emblematic of the problem at large. We will show actual repairs that illustrate either a total lack of knowledge, or decisions based upon greed over the proper repair on behalf of the guest.

This article is not intended to condemn the industry that we all love. But it is intended to raise the bar and challenge those who contribute to the problem.

With the rapid evolution of automotive technology, what used to work – even just a few years back – isn’t likely to be appropriate for repairs today. Different materials, more sensors, advanced computers are just the beginning.

The need for ongoing training to keep up with the ever-changing landscape of our industry is at an all time high. And that training doesn’t just apply to body shops. Insurance companies and dealerships also have a responsibility to keep up with the changes.

So why are so many shops, dealerships and insurance adjusters still performing improper, and often dangerous repairs?

“I think the problem in our industry is one of both ignorance and greed. Ignorance comes from the process of ‘doing what we’ve always done’. We have to look at how the vehicle was constructed, and what materials were used when the vehicle was manufactured, and whether or not we should repair a dent instead of replacing a component. Too often proper precautions are ignored before welding, putting the SRS system at risk. You simply don’t know unless you pull and follow the OEM repair procedures.

“As it relates to greed, I have supplied a couple of photos of a quarter panel that was repaired, and we ended up having to replace from a dealership DRP shop. Technicians are rewarded financially for producing as many hours as they can. Shops are rewarded for faster cycle times and cheaper repairs by the insurance companies, regardless of the actual safety of the repairs. If that’s not driven by greed, I don’t know what it is.”

Insurance companies regularly use the phrase, ‘industry standard’ to justify cutting corners on paying for the proper repairs. Shops that are under contract with these insurers are too many times obligated to play along without rocking the boat, even when they know that improper repairs are flying out the door. Why in the world would members of the collision industry knowingly participate in improper repairs or faster cycle times at the sacrifice of the consumer’s best interest? Is it ignorance, or greed?

Isn’t our duty to the customer, first? Shouldn’t the guest be our #1 priority? Doesn’t quality go beyond the surface appearance of only what is immediately visible? We believe that it’s time to face these issues and adjust accordingly. If the shoe fits, don’t just wear it… change it up and get on the side of the proper repairs on behalf of the customer.

This post is an open letter to all members of the collision industry. Comments are welcomed and encouraged. We have assembled a list of things you absolutely need to know before taking your car to any shop for hail repair.

1. Your insurance company owes you for the FULL VALUE of your hail repair claim… however, most first estimates are deliberately written for only 50%-60% of the actual value of the claim. They are hoping that you will simply cash the check without actually repairing the damage to your vehicle. This is a huge mistake in most cases, as the insurance company boosts their profits, and you pay the difference when you go to sell or trade in the car.

Get a post-scan. The best hail repair shops will make sure that before they deliver your car back to you, they perform a post scan to make sure that all safety systems and electronics are connected and calibrated if necessary. Your safety is at stake. Make sure that everything is working the way it should be.

3. Never let them cut glued reinforcements. This is common practice in lesser quality hail shops. Cutting glued reinforcements can result in rattles or even worse, compromised structural integrity.

4. Never let them drill holes for access to hard-to-reach areas. Another all-too-common practice among paintless dent repair (PDR) tents and shops is to drill holes into the structural posts and rails to reach the dents. No vehicle manufacturers support this practice, as it obviously degrades the integrity of the structure, putting you and your passengers at risk.

5. Make sure all one-time use trim pieces and moldings are properly REPLACED, and not REUSED. Often, technicians need to remove trim pieces inside the cabin of your car. These pieces can cover airbags, and in many cases are designed to be removed only once – in times of an accident that includes airbag deployment. If a tech tries to reattach a one-time use panel, it could become a projectile during an accident.

6. Factory corrosion protection must be replaced. Your vehicle is 100% protected from rust and other corrosion. Any time that is compromised during a hail repair process, the corrosion protection must be replaced. Many substandard shops skip this step, and when rust starts, the safety of your vehicle is immediately jeopardized.

7. What if there’s broken paint? Best hail repair shops know that just touching up paint cracks isn’t good enough. Not only does it look horrible, but it doesn’t protect against corrosion. Make sure the people doing your hail repair have a facility to repaint and master your vehicle’s color.

8. OEM parts are important. No matter what the insurance company tells you, aftermarket parts are, by definition, not the same as original manufacturer’s parts. If they cut corners on your parts, what else are they willing to compromise?

9. Your windshield could save your life. More and more vehicle manufacturers are insisting upon using OEM glass because areas of the glass are infused with technology that works with the safety systems elsewhere in the car. There are many case studies of shops using lesser quality windshields which could affect the entire safety system of the car.

If you’re truly looking for the best hail repair in Colorado, here at Nylund’s we pay attention to each and every one of the above listed steps – for every repair we do. If it’s not perfect… it’s not leaving. Contact us with any questions you might have.

USAA insured gets into accident, and is “encouraged” (steered?) to take her car to their “preferred” shop (big box body shop). Car is “repaired” and delivered to insured, who immediately feels as though the repair was substandard. She decides to bring it to Nylund’s Collision Center for a post-repair inspection.

Upon inspection, we identify several missed, overlooked and incorrect repairs performed on the vehicle. The insured’s vehicle is suggested to be a total loss by Nylund’s, and supporting documentation is provided to both the insured and the insurance company. Both the insured and the insurance company were told on day 1 that the original manufacturer does NOT provide repair procedures for the damages to the vehicle, and therefore the repairs performed were incorrect.

This delay and expensive mishandling of an insured’s case happens every day in the insurance and collision repair industry. Nylund’s takes a stand for doing the right repair the first time – every time. We are committed to informing our guests of every step along the right repair – even when it means that the best course of action is to avoid an incorrect repair process.

Your Money or Your Life

Dear Members of the United States Congress,

I am writing this open letter to express my strong opposition to H.R. 1879 and S. 812, Promoting Automotive Repair Trade and Sales Act of 2017, also known as the PARTS Act. I am especially disappointed in U.S. Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), and lead sponsors U.S. Representatives Darrell Issa (R-CA), Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), with original cosponsors Reps. Blake Farentold (R-TX), Steve Cohen (D-TN), Scott Perry (R-PA) and Jim Langevin (D-RI) who have put their names in support of this bill.

I am the current very proud owner of Nylund’s Collision Center located in Englewood, Colorado.

I oppose the Parts Act for the following reasons:

A. The language of the PARTS Act completely ignores the value of established patent law, specifically as it relates to the investment in design, manufacture and especially safety testing of vehicles that are built as an entire unit to work seamlessly with all other parts of the same vehicle.

B. The language of the PARTS Act suggests that it is against, or ignorant of the safety of the consumer who would – in an effort to save money – purchase parts that may appear to be “similar or the same in appearance to the component part”. Failure of an imitation part that appears to be the same after an accident could put the lives of the vehicle’s occupants at risk.

Appearing similar or same in appearance is not the same as being the same.

Aftermarket component parts are not subject to the same crashworthiness tests as OEM parts

Aftermarket component parts are manufactured, sold and certified as individual parts and have no collaborative data nor accountability to all associated parts of the vehicle which is designed to work together as a whole unit.

C. The PARTS Act is a blatant attempt to boost the profit margins of the insurance companies and their associated partners, lobbyists and the manufacturers and distributors of aftermarket parts.

Under the guise of protecting the consumer’s wallet, no consideration is offered to the actual costs of manufacture.

The only beneficiaries are those who stand to gain the most – and they are the insurance companies, manufacturers and distributors of aftermarket parts.

D. Accountability to safety is obfuscated by the pursuit of profits.

Who will oversee the manufacturers’ production and at what expense?

Where will the money come from to assure the consumer that aftermarket parts are in fact now identical to OEM parts?

The words, “Your Money or Your Life” used to be uttered by muggers in a dark alleyway. Today, they’re being uttered by members of the United States Senate and House of Representatives, along with their posse of special interest lobbyists and associations. The consequences in the balance are the same now as they were then.

Please make this letter part of the record of any hearings on H.R. 1879 and/or S. 812.

I urge you to consider the value of life above the value of insurance company profits.

I urge you to vote against H.R. 1879 and S. 812 – and vote for the lives of the people who voted for you.

Note: I am calling upon my own state Senators & Congressmen (Cory Gardner and Michael Bennett / Jared Polis, Mike Coffman, Diana DeGette, Scott Tipton, Ken Buck, Ed Perlmutter and Doug Lamborn) to vote NO on H.R. 1879 and S. 812.

Every now and again the winds of inspiration blow through our offices here at Nylund’s Collision Center. And when they do, we are quick to listen – and then act upon it. In today’s case, we were reminded of the things that are important by the classic voice of legendary radio personality, Paul Harvey. Back in 1978, Harvey delivered his famous speech: “God Made a Farmer”.

Today, we present our version, served up as a tribute to all the professionals within the auto body industry. Please enjoy: God Made a Body Shop Owner.

It’s a new year, and we are thrilled to announce that Nylund’s Collision Center has a NEW LOCATION!!

4495 S. Santa Fe
Englewood, CO 80110

After 10 wonderful years of serving our guests and building up the brand that has become synonymous with excellence… we officially outgrew our old location! And so, to serve the next 10+ years we have invested in a property of our own… and you’re going to love it!

Changing times requires upgraded equipment, so we’ve got a brand new paint booth (thank you, Garmat USA and John Baker Sales!) and we’ll continue to apply the world’s best paint (thank you, PPG!).

And did we mention the space? We’ve doubled our work space to help us get your vehicles into the shop and back into your hands even faster!

We love what we do, and who we do it for! It’s more than just a saying here: “If it isn’t perfect… it isn’t leaving!”
